Genting Berhad

Genting Berhad is the investment holding and management company of the Genting Group, which was founded by the late Tan Sri (Dr.) Lim Goh Tong in 1965. The shares of Genting Berhad were listed on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad in 1971. The current market capitalisation of the Genting Group of companies is approximately RM120 billion. Kien Huat Realty Sdn Bhd, a company controlled by the late Tan Sri (Dr.) Lim Goh Tong’s family, owns approximately 40% of Genting Berhad.

Genting Berhad was set up to develop and operate an integrated tourist complex comprising hotels, casino, theme parks, retail, convention & exhibition, food & beverage and many other leisure and entertainment facilities in Genting Highlands, Malaysia. The entire complex is now known as Resorts World Genting. A restructuring exercise was undertaken in 1989 which involved the transfer of the Resorts World Genting business to, and a separate listing of, Genting Malaysia Berhad on Bursa Securities and resulted in Genting Berhad becoming an investment and management company.

The leisure and hospitality business of the Genting Group has grown to include other Resorts World and associated properties in Singapore, United Kingdom, United States, Bahamas and Philippines. Genting Malaysia Berhad also has an investment in Genting Hong Kong Limited which operates the Star Cruises business in Asia.

Besides leisure and tourism, the Genting Group invested in oil palm plantations in 1980 with the acquisition of The Rubber Trust Group which owned approximately 13,660 hectares of plantation land in Peninsular Malaysia. This business is separately listed on Bursa Securities as Genting Plantations Berhad and its landbank has grown via numerous acquisitions to 228,000 hectares of plantation land in Malaysia and Indonesia. Genting Plantations Berhad also undertakes property development on some of its landbank in Peninsular Malaysia.

The Genting Group is also involved in electricity power generation and oil and gas exploration as well as invested in bio-technology and life sciences companies which seek to integrate technology into the field of detection and diagnosis of diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, colorectal cancer and sepsis.
