Genting Berhad is the investment
holding and management company of the Genting Group, which was founded by the
late Tan Sri (Dr.) Lim Goh Tong in 1965. The shares of Genting Berhad were
listed on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad in 1971. The
current market capitalisation of the Genting Group of companies is approximately
RM120 billion. Kien Huat Realty Sdn Bhd, a company controlled by the late Tan
Sri (Dr.) Lim Goh Tong’s family, owns approximately 40% of Genting Berhad.
Genting Berhad was set up to develop and operate an integrated tourist complex
comprising hotels, casino, theme parks, retail, convention & exhibition, food &
beverage and many other leisure and entertainment facilities in Genting
Highlands, Malaysia. The entire complex is now known as Resorts World Genting. A
restructuring exercise was undertaken in 1989 which involved the transfer of the
Resorts World Genting business to, and a separate listing of, Genting Malaysia
Berhad on Bursa Securities and resulted in Genting Berhad becoming an investment
and management company.
The leisure and hospitality business of the Genting Group has grown to include
other Resorts World and associated properties in Singapore, United Kingdom,
United States, Bahamas and Philippines. Genting Malaysia Berhad also has an
investment in Genting Hong Kong Limited which operates the Star Cruises business
Besides leisure and tourism, the Genting Group invested in oil palm plantations
in 1980 with the acquisition of The Rubber Trust Group which owned approximately
13,660 hectares of plantation land in Peninsular Malaysia. This business is
separately listed on Bursa Securities as Genting Plantations Berhad and its
landbank has grown via numerous acquisitions to 228,000 hectares of plantation
land in Malaysia and Indonesia. Genting Plantations Berhad also undertakes
property development on some of its landbank in Peninsular Malaysia.
The Genting Group is also involved in electricity power generation and oil and
gas exploration as well as invested in bio-technology and life sciences
companies which seek to integrate technology into the field of detection and
diagnosis of diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, colorectal cancer and sepsis.
